- EAST HARTFORD ART LEAGUE PRESENTED LISA HENNESSEY ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2–4 p.m.
The East Hartford Art League is happy to announce that on Sunday, January 22, there will be an art program featuring stained glass artist Lisa Hennessey. From 2 to 4 p.m., attendees will learn first-hand how Ms. Hennessey’s love of color combines with a love of texture and light to make stained glass mosaic work that delights everyone – from youngsters to grown-ups! This program is FREE and open to the public, held in the Fine Arts Commission Room 12 located on the lower level of the East Hartford Community Center.
The Art League, along with the East Hartford Fine Arts Commission, is proud to sponsor Lisa Hennessey who is a regionally acclaimed artist. Lisa once presented her “Demonstration of a Mosaic” upon a blade of a harrow. This fun project was guaranteed to delight the young at heart as we watched for ourselves how art can grow from simple objects when combined with imagination and technique. This month’s presentation will feature Lisa as she designs and implements a real stained glass window into an old window frame.
Ms. Hennessey runs a successful working studio located in Putnam CT, where her mosaic work brings her happiness and a strong sense of self that helps keep her “centered” as a mother of four children. Says Lisa, “Indulging my creative side is how I share, socialize, relax, express, and fill any need at any given time.” Ms. Hennessey was a financial lending specialist for 22 years before she opened her studio in Putnam. Out of all of those who attend, who knows, maybe the inner artist in one of you will be the next to open a successful workshop!
- The Thrill of the Chase at the Wadsworth: The Wagstaff Collection of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum, September 10 — December 11, 2016
If you and your family are interested in touring this exhibit, please plan to meet at the Walgreen’s parking lot on Sunday afternoon, November 20, at 1:00 p.m. The East Hartford Art League and the East Hartford Fine Arts Commission will be traveling over by CT Transit (on the 1:17 bus) where we will join in a guided tour of this remarkable exhibit of photographs. Admission is $12 and the bus trip costs $1.50 each way. (Art League members who RSVP will get in free) EXTRA EXTRA! Due to popular demand, we will also be meeting at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday November 27, at the Walgreen’s parking lot next to Connecticut Boulevard, for a second Field Trip!!The Thrill of the Chase: The Wagstaff Collection of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum showcases a wide range of photographs from the Getty’s collection. Organized by Paul Martineau, Associate Curator for the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the exhibition uses these photographs as a basis for exploring Samuel J. Wagstaff Jr.’s enduring vision and influence.
From 1973 to 1984, Samuel J. Wagstaff Jr. (American, 1921-1987) assembled one of the most important private collections of photographs in the world. Wagstaff promoted photography as an art form by organizing exhibitions, delivering lectures, and publishing material on his collection. In 1984, Wagstaff sold his collection to the J. Paul Getty Museum. Numbering several thousand, the collection now forms a cornerstone of the Getty Museum’s holdings of photographs.Wagstaff served as a curator of paintings and sculpture at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (1961-1968) and curator of contemporary art at the Detroit Institute of Art (1969-1971). In addition to being a collector and curator, he was the mentor of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
In 1973, Wagstaff began to sell his collection of contemporary paintings in order to raise funds to purchase photographs. He was not only at the forefront of establishing a market for this neglected art form; his reputation as an arbiter of artistic taste also provided an impetus for the collection and study of photography by museums and scholars.
Well-known photographers such as William Henry Fox Talbot, Gustave Le Gray, Julia Margaret Cameron, Edgar Degas, Walker Evans, Dr. Harold Edgerton, Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, and William Klein will be featured, among many others.

- East Hartford Art League“Spring Art Fest” Winners:
The 2015 Spring Art Fest, held on Saturday May 9, 2015 featured over 100 beautiful hand-painted (or drawn) pieces of art from fourteen area artists. Judge Nancy Wynn teamed up with Rep. Jeff Currey to present twelve different awards, setting the stage for a grand finale “Lifetime Achievement” award presented to Ms. Terrye Blackstone for her long-time dedication to the Art League and the Town of East Hartford.
EHHS student Changhun “C” Lee serenaded the event on electric piano, with even the weather cooperating. The East Hartford Art League would like to thank the Parks and Rec. Dept., Rep. Currey, Nancy Wynn, all the artists, our sponsors, and the members of the East Hartford Fine Arts Commission for their support of our Art League! Thank you, we could not accomplish all that we do without your help!
February Art League Presentation Features Local Artist Butch Wandy
The East Hartford Art League is honored to announce that on Tuesday, February 18 from 6 to 8 p.m., local artist Butch Wandy will present the unique art of prismatic imagery. This presentation will take place in Room 107 of the East Hartford Community Center. The presentation is free and is open to the public as well as East Hartford Art League members. Please plan to attend to learn more about imagery and enjoy this art presentation. Light refreshments will be served. To help combat those mid-winter doldrums, the first four people through the door will be awarded a $20 Gift Card! So don’t be shy, join us on Tuesday evening Feb. 18, you will be glad you did! - Presenting Area Artist Luciana Heineman Tuesday Nov. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Attention area artists of all skill levels! On Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m., the East Hartford Art League and the East Hartford Fine Arts Commission sponsored a fabulous presentation by featured area artist Ms. Luciana Heineman!
An experienced painter and art teacher, Ms. Heineman has received numerous prestigious awards throughout her career. Her works of art are on display in permanent collections, among them Aetna Life Insurance, Hartford Insurance Company, the Town of Windsor, and the Town of East Hartford CT. Ms. Heineman is often selected to judge regional art exhibits as well as scholastic art contests.
On Nov. 19 Ms. Heineman demonstrated a variety of techniques as she paints a scenic landscape during this two hour presentation. She has made it her lifelong endeavor and passion to teach art. Many of her students attend successful demonstrations and workshops for Art Clubs and civic organizations throughout the region.
East Hartford Art League Featured Artist Neil Lefebvre on Sunday, September 29
The East Hartford Art League is pleased and honored to announce that on Sunday, September 29, artist Neil LeFebvre will demonstrate his fabulous painting styles best described as pop art and “Retro”. Held in the Fine Arts Room at the Community Center at 2 p.m., this wonderful opportunity is FREE and open to the public.
Neil has worked in many mediums and styles over the years, but is best known for his delightful oil paintings that can range from a close-up of a candy wrapper to old neon signs and vintage dance record covers. Neil’s paintings have been displayed throughout Connecticut, most recently at the New Britain Museum of American Art. He has received numerous awards and honors, but is always striving to be the best that he can be as a visual artist.
Neil draws inspiration from driving Route 66, touring the old, worn-out, vast areas of American pop culture better known as flea markets, antique shops and tag sales. Neil has been influenced by sixties artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburgh and James Rosequist.
This fun presentation is guaranteed to delight the young at heart as we see for ourselves how to get started with our own drawings and how to successfully illustrate!

January 2013 Art League Presentation Features Artist Diana Lyn Cote
The East Hartford Art League and the East Hartford Fine Arts Commission are honored to announce that on Sunday, January 13, regionally famed artist Diana Lyn Cote will demonstrate her unique painting styles using oil sticks to capture natural sunlight and nature. Diana’s paintings are everyone’s favorite subjects, especially now as we are amidst long dreary winter months and patiently awaiting Spring in New England! Held in the Fine Arts Room at the East Hartford Community Center at 2 p.m., this wonderful opportunity is free and open to the public. So come ring in the New Year by getting in tune with your artistic self, this is a free art lesson you do not want to miss!
Ms. Cote has been exhibiting her art for nearly two decades, and has a diverse following of private and corporate collectors. She is well known for her inventive expressionistic styles and use of light. As she paints, Diana layers each color using the oil sticks to weave a tapestry of colors and light in nature that, when completed, is so lifelike as to resemble a photograph. Diana will also show various works of art that have identified her as a most unique and popular artist.
Diana says this about her talents, “Understanding the colors that make up the subtle or dramatic effects of light, and applying them in a way that is unique, is a focus of my journey as an artist. “Fleurage” Techniques By Artist Harry White - Sunday, February 12, 2012
The East Hartford Art League and the East Hartford Fine Arts Commission are honored to announce that on Sunday, February 12, accomplished artist Mr. Harry White will demonstrate how he creates original collages using pressed flowers. Held in the Fine Arts Room at the East Hartford Community Center at 2 p.m., this wonderful opportunity is FREE and open to the public. As he demonstrates for the group this technique, which he has named “fleurage”, Mr. White will also show various works of art that have identified him as a unique artist in art communities across the U.S. and in Europe.
Mr. White says this about his talents, “I am an artist, a beautifier, and a collagist. At age 26 I developed fleurage, the name I gave my collages made primarily with flower petals and plant parts.” Gardening in all of its aspects is, as you may imagine, essential to this dedicated artist who now lives in Glastonbury CT. So don’t let winter doldrums get you down, plan to be over at the East Hartford Community Center promptly at 2 p.m. on Sunday February 12th to assure yourself a good seat! This is an unusual artistic presentation, so if you are intrigued and inspired you may want to take notes so you can try it yourself – after all, gifts to family and friends that are hand-made often bring great joy to both the recipient and the one who gives.
“Spring Art Fest” Saturday, May 7, 2011 - The annual Spring Art Fest is planned for the Saturday before Mother’s Day, which this year falls on May 7, and will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Raymond Library lawn. Sponsored by the East Hartford Fine Arts Commission and the East Hartford Art League, each year this event is successful in bringing many different forms of art together for the public to enjoy. “Ever since 1958, when a small group of artists and art-lovers got together with the idea of forming an art league here in East Hartford,” said Marilyn Pet, Art League member, “the Art League has held monthly programs that bring free art instruction to the residents of our town.”
During last year’s Spring Art Fest, Town Council Members presented the awards, saying, “We are very lucky in our town to have such talented resident artists. Art is so very important in our society, it brings us together and helps us appreciate the beauty to create that is within each of us.”
Last year’s artists and craftspersons braved a week of rain, right up until the Spring Art Fest began, in order to participate.
Admission is only $10 per artist. Artists may enter as many pieces of artwork as they wish.
There are over $1,000 in prizes awarded, from the most prestigious “Purchase Award” to various Gift Cards and Trophies and Ribbons.- On Sunday, February 22, 2009, there was held an art program featuring photographer Jeff Feldmann. This slideshow of nature was FREE and open to the public, and was held in the Community Center Fine Arts Room, lower level, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The program featured full color slides of wildlife taken from Jeff’s kayak as he paddled along the banks of the Connecticut River and its tributaries. Attendees could see what it is like to paddle in the fog, view the sunrise from the water, as well as wildflowers, eagles and sunsets. The Spring Art Fest, held each year on the day before Mother’s Day on the Raymond Library Green, features visual art exhibits, competition and sale, along with musical entertainment, refreshments and prizes. During this annual event, one lucky and creative Winner is awarded the much-coveted Purchase Award and is asked to “sell” his or her painting to the Town so that it can join the Town of East Hartford’s Art League Purchase Award winners in the Raymond Library!
